U.S. passport photos
U.S. passport photos must be 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm), with your head measuring 1 to 1 3/8 inches from the bottom of your chin to the top of your head. The background must be plain white or off-white, and the photo must have been taken in the last 6 months.
Glasses are not allowed in U.S. passport photos. Most U.S. visa and USCIS applications also use 2 x 2 inch photos, so check your form instructions and tell us what the photos are for.
Canadian passport photos
Canadian passport photos are larger: 50 mm wide by 70 mm tall. Canada asks for two identical photos, with the name and complete address of the photographer or studio and the date the photo was taken on the back.
If your application needs a guarantor to sign the back of a photo, take the photos to your guarantor after your appointment.
Passport and visa photos for other countries
Photo sizes vary by country. Many countries, including the United Kingdom and Schengen countries, use 35 x 45 mm photos. Tell us the country and document when you book, and bring the official photo instructions if you have them.

Additional photos are $15 for each set of 2. A digital file is $20, which is useful for online applications such as U.S. online passport renewal.
Tips for your photo
Wear everyday clothing in a color that stands out from a white background. Remove glasses and hats, unless you wear a head covering for religious or medical reasons. Keep a neutral expression with both eyes open.
